For the past few years, there’s been a buzz steadily growing around Costa Rica. This lush, tropical country has captured the hearts of many, and it’s easy to see why. It offers an easy alternative to those who frequent Mexico, and it appeals to both those looking to relax and those looking for a bit of adventure. Plus, with a quick 3-½ hour flight from Houston, there’s no reason not to go!

We suggest starting your trip with some relaxation on the beach. Our favorite resorts are located on Peninsula Papagayo, an exclusive area on the north Pacific coast of Costa Rica. This peninsula is located in the Golfo de Papagayo and was formed by volcanic activity. Many of the beaches in Costa Rica are quite unique, with tangles of palm trees and tropical rain forest lining the dark sand beaches. However, you’ll find some lovely golden beaches at some of our favorite resorts, including the Four Seasons. While in this part of Costa Rica, take a surfing lesson at Blanca Beach or rent a boat for the day and tube, fish, paddleboard – whatever your heart desires!

After a few days of total relaxation, have a private driver take you to your next destination: La Fortuna.  This scenic three-hour drive will take you through the northern highlands of Costa Rica, through mountains and past Lake Arenal. Located due east of Peninsula Papagayo, La Fortuna is in the heart of what many consider quintessential Costa Rica. This is where you’ll be surrounded by lush tropical rainforest and right near Arenal Volcano. With a stay at Nayara Resort, our favorite hotel in the area, you’ll enjoy ultimate luxury in the heart of La Fortuna. While there, we suggest taking a gondola ride through the rain forest and up into the mountains, where you’ll be up amongst the treetops with many different tropical birds. For those adventurous enough, you can take a series of zip lines back down. This is also a great place to take a nature hike, and Nayara offers a wonderful Hanging Bridges hike with a guide, who will point out some of the most picturesque views of Arenal Volcano. For animal lovers, this is the place to be – you’ll be surrounded by beautiful birds, monkeys who swing past the window of your room, and sloths who roam the hotel grounds. It really is a place like no other.

If you’re looking for something different for your next vacation, give Costa Rica a try. It’s a great family destination, with activities for everyone. It can also be extremely romantic, and a good option for honeymoons or anniversary trips.
