I have just returned from an exciting, extraordinary trip half-way around the world to South Africa and Zambia.  A woefully understated comment would be that this was a memorable trip.

Beginning with five nights in Capetown, we saw Southern Africa at its best.  Capetown, especially the waterfront area, is a delight.  Everything from wonderful dining (at bargain prices) to diving (in a cage) with Great White Sharks will provide anyone with more than enough choices for a great stay.

Journeys into the countryside were part of the trip.  Cape of Good Hope (protected on the south by sharks and baboons to the north) was a highlight of one day’s trip.  Seal Island, penguins and a terrific lunch stop were other features of the day.

Additional destinations during our stay in Capetown included Table Mountain, the wine country, Nelson Mandela’s prison and shanty towns were other fascinating destinations.

After experiencing the 5 star quality of life in Capetown we were off for three days and nights of safari.

The best opportunity to see wildlife and to view “The Big 5” of African animals is at a private reserve bordering Kruger National Park.  The food and facilities of the lodge can rival any deluxe resort worldwide – and here you get to experience wildlife wandering around your home.

Two safari drives a day, early morning and late afternoon, provide an opportunity to explore the vast expanse available, from forest to open veldt.  Until you have seen a lion within arms-length or an elephant graze you with his tusk, you cannot really imagine the difference between a zoo and life in the wild.

Victoria Falls was the capstone to the adventure.  Again, the resort was fabulous and within walking distance to the falls.  Victoria Falls is the widest falls in the world (almost a mile across) and the effect of the sound and visual power of the site is almost indescribable.  Alert – be prepared to get soaked as you immerse yourself in the experience.
